increased
airport security inspires art project
In airports
around the world, security personnel are often asking camera-toting travellers
to take a photo to prove their camera is not a security risk. Canadian visual
artist Isabelle Devos is collecting these photographs for a project inspired by
the increased airport security measures.
While
there have been many changes in our sense of security, this one may be the only
one that is unwittingly being documented; a record being produced
by travellers on their journey. Devos is specifically compelled to discover what
people choose to photograph under the tight parameters of
the situation.
With only seconds to consider, is it the security personnel, a travelling partner,
luggage, the floor or something else that they choose to take a snapshot of?
From
these collected photos Devos will develop an art piece that will address the cultural
and social patterns within the images. When exhibited, the final piece will create
an intriguing record of one seemingly insignificant detail in our ever-changing
world.
Throughout
the gathering process, she expects to see patterns begin to emerge in the subject
matter of the photos, giving shape to the project as it hurtles along. Devos is
certain the adventure will be enlightening and is confident that it will pique
interest beyond the artistic community.
Devos
is currently receiving photographs and intends to spend several months collecting
snapshots (digital and other) and subsequently producing an exhibition that will
travel to several galleries across the country.
Participants and the general
public can follow the progress on the projectsâ web site:

Photo submissions
are currently being sought through national and international newspaper and magazine
ads, internet communities and word of mouth. Devos asks that participants send
details such as location, date and destination along with the submitted photos.
Any and all photographs taken
in airport security areas since September 11th are of great interest to her.
