The
final installation involved a large adhesive vinyl print, adhered to a sheet of
perspex. The image uses data from the District of Leistavia constitution project,
created for ISEA in Tallinn. The aim of the constitution project was to create
a culture that was a hybrid of Pitcairn, Norfolk and Estonian cultures (Tallinn
is the capital of Estonia). That was done by firstly getting involved in a long
research period, and making contact with many groups and individuals, a process
that eventually led to the creation of an online voting form, so that online voters
could make decisions about what was in the Leistavian constitution. Given
that online voters clearly are digitally orientated, and consequently often come
from the less poverty stricken areas of the Western European sphere, it was interesting
to see from the voting statistics that very few selected democracy for political
system and monetarism for economic system. What was voted for overwhelmingly was
meritocracy for political system (i.e. the person who serves the community most
is leader) and ecologically sustainable values for economic system, even if this
meant increased prices. Ecological values and geekism, actually go hand in hand. Here
are the summary statistics related to the above image:
Select economic system. Actual voting results as percentages: Cash based on
gold 5%. Barter 20%. Ecologically sustainable value 61%. Spiritual value 14%.
